Police has been able to arrest 44 year old, Mohammad Javed involved in credit card fraud, in Mumbai. The man was caught red-handed by the shopkeepers. His three accomplices managed to flee. Twenty eight fake credit cards and three mobile phones were recovered from the room they were staying in. the case has been reported to Central crime Branch (CCB) for further inquiry. The credit card swiping machine indicated that the cardholder was based in United Kingdom and that is how the shopkeepers suspected the fraud. Javeed disclosed that he got the fake credit cards from agents in Mumbai, who had collected them from UK. He said that jewellery shops were their main targets and had bought jewellery from some of the leading shops. The experts who probe these credit card frauds say that approval of payment of the billed amount is given by credit card agencies like Mastercard or Visa after verifying the authenticity of the code number on the magnetic strip. In case of a fake credit card, when the data is sent to the issuer bank, there will be mismatches in the name of the holder and the code number and the transaction will be declined by the bank. Credit card frauds have increased with 220 cases registered so far, a 34 percent jump from last year's number of 145. The easy availability of credit cards and a sudden spurt in online shopping is said to be a major reason. |
