RBI Dy. governor Usha Thorat retires

Usha Thorat, deputy governor of Reserve Bank of India has retired. The departments handled by her will temporarily looked after by Shyamala Gopinath.

Gopinath stands as the senior most amongst the three deputy governors.

"The portfolios handled by Ms Thorat will temporarily be looked after by Ms Gopinath until further orders," said RBI.

Thorat held critical portfolios like banking operations and development, banking supervision, currency management, rural planning, credit department, and financial inclusion among others.

Anand Sinha has been selected to succeed to Thorat's post. However, he is yet to receive official orders for the same from the ministry of finance.

Ms Thorat, an alumnus of Delhi School of Economics joined RBI in 1972. She was appointed as deputy governor in the year 2005 prior to which she held the office as one of the executive directors of RBI since April 2003.
