RBI insists on 2nd password for internet shopping

Reserve Bank of India is insisting on introducing a second password for all online shopping transactions through foreign websites.

This is likely to become a cropper as a second authentication comes in the way of shopping using Indian cards or vice versa.

RBI has however made itself clear through a notification that there will be no compromise made regarding security of online transactions.

This second authentication became mandatory from 1 August 2009 before which only the 16 digit card number and the CVV number was sufficient for online shopping transactions.

A public sector bank official said that despite the notification, some banks still allowed transactions without the second authentication. RBI has clearly stated now that it is now mandatory for "all transactions using cards issued in India, for payments on merchant site where no outflow of foreign exchange is contemplated".
