The government has till now not received any claim from banks for reimbursement related to the interest subsidy scheme on education loans. There are apprehensions that the new scheme might have failed to hit the target as was expected out of it. The HRD ministry has received complaints from students and no claims from banks. The ministry has finally had a talk with the finance ministry and urged on its intervention in the issue. Under the interest subsidy scheme, the government had declared that it would be paying the interest on education loans during the years of study and moratorium period for students whose family income was less than Rs 4.5 lakh per annum. The letter sent by the HRD ministry to the finance ministry reads, "The scheme is effective from the academic year 2009-10 and this ministry has not received any claim from the member scheduled banks so far." "Banks are usually prompt to claim their due and we are concerned about the implementation of the scheme. The details of claims - if any - will at least tell us how far the scheme has been implemented and how many students it has benefited," a source said.
