Microfinance Institutions Network (MFIN) has made an appeal to the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) so as to allow them to become one of the registrars and aid in the project. The MFIN seems to prove to be a helping hand to the UIDAI with access to a collective base of 25 million borrowers and their family members too. "UIDAI is a project of national importance. We would like to be part of this," said the network's president, Vijay Mahajan. Unique identification numbers will also help microfinance institutions track borrowers more effectively. "I have spoken to UIDAI chairman Nandan Nilekani. He even attended one of our meetings," Mr Mahajan said. Bandhan Financial Services managing director Chandra Shekhar Ghosh said: "Once our borrowers get their identification numbers, tracking their loan accounts will become much easier." According to Mr Mahajan, MFIs may get the registrar license in the third phase of allotments after the state governments and banks and LIC have been involved.
