Banks have been facing a problem of receiving fake currency notes lately. Around 5 banks lodged complaints with the police after receiving fake currencies in the denominations of Rs. 1000, Rs. 500 and Rs.100. In the previous week, the police received six complaints and cases were registered by the Central Crime Branch police. Various inquiries by Police revealed that while receiving cash bank employees checked the number of currencies in the bundle using counting machines. They checked the notes physically at random and discovered the fake currencies. "In major branches, during business hours, checking each and every currency physically may not be possible," the officers told police. A senior bank official said that the banks were required to adhere to RBI norms of informing the police whenever they found fake currencies. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Crime) V. She said that the police conducted awareness programmes on the consequences of possessing fake notes. Besides this, she said, the police also conducted trainings for officers on the need to be vigilant on handling at regular intervals. They also cautioned their staff in charge at the cash counters as and when they suspected serial numbers from their regional and head offices on fake currencies.
