Majority of the population in the country resides in rural areas and despite being a rapidly developing economy the a lot of people here are still devoid of banking facilities. To make banking facilities accessible in remote areas of the country, government launched Financial Inclusion Plan. About this Finance Minister, Mr. Pranab Mukherjee said, "Financial inclusion is an important policy of the government not as an important instrument of socio-economic development but if you want to sustain a high growth rate and to address this chronic problem of poverty, deprivation and disparity." A huge population in the country is still to be covered by the banks. This not only will benefit the people but also there lies the opportunity for the banks to escalate their growth rate. The government has also advised the lenders to take up the initiative of providing credit to the farmers on priority basis. This is to be done by issuing Kisan Credit Cards to all those who satisfies the eligibility criteria. "I have requested the state governments to take up this task on a campaign basis," said Mr. Pranab Mukherjee. For the present fiscal year the target for the target for agricultural credit is set at Rs. 2,616 crore.
