Loans offered by micro finance institutions (MFIs) to over four crore poor people will now be tracked by the credit bureaus of the country.

"About 30 MFIs, including major ones, have joined credit bureaus. Many of them have also started using the data for operations," Mr Alok Prasad, Chief Executive Officer, Microfinance Institutions Network (MFIN) said.

The data in this front is actively being collected by credit bureaus namely Equifax, Highmark and Credit Information Bureau of India Ltd (CIBIL).

Prasad said that while on one hand, Equifax and Highmark are focusing highly on MFIs, CIBIL is more into testing its technology platform for this segment.

"Profiles of over 38 million clients across the country are now with credit bureaus," the MFIN functionary said.

"However, the credit bureau data would be in excess of this as some tend to borrow from more than one company," Mr Prasad said.
