The government has made electronic filling of income tax mandatory for people with annual income above Rs 5 lakh.

Mr. Sumit Bose, Revenue Secretary said at a post-budget interaction with FICCI members, "Income tax returns for the group above Rs 5 lakh will be e-filed. This is a move towards using technology so that the interface between the assessing officer and assessee is minimized".

The officials said that the reason behind this move this the fact that about 80 per cent of taxpayers who are not mandated to file e-returns are already doing so.

Sections 139C and 139D of the I-T Act contain provisions for facilitating filing of return of income in an electronic form by certain classes of income-tax assessees.
